The tradition of Lace and Embroidery in Rimini

Address:
Rimini

La tradizone del merletto e del ricamo a RiminiFerruccio De Lupis, in an article of 1921 on "Rassegna d’Arte" magazine - conducted by Corrado Ricci, the husbandof Elisa Ricci the great historic of lace and embroidery, wrote: "As for embroidery, they were one of the peculiarities of women in Romagna. But though it’s genuine regional art it never became a real industry.
A lady named Mrs. Anita Sangiorgi Bianchi, in remembrance of embroideries that were disappearing, collected antique embroidered cloth models, and instituted tapestries schools, which until a few years ago, lived flourishing under her own name and leadership. "

A few words are not enough to explain what Anita Sangiorgi did and the high quality of the products that emerged from her laboratory.
She belonged to a family of antique dealers, scientists and collectors in Rimini and instituted in 1897 a school for 120 embroiderers. The work consisted in lace of every sort of stitch, white and silk embroidery. The famous, perfect and particular details produced by the schools tapestries - small stitch or France-stitch, half-stitch, Marseilles-stitch, Romagna-stitch, bargello - were required in Italy and abroad. The Sangiorgio laboratory developed a flourishing activity, which still are an example for passionate people of this art, as Professor Bianca Rosa Bellomo, who made a deep-thorough historical research about the laboratories in Rimini, and embroidery women who still are working in groups and associations in order to pass from generation to generation this precious art.

Rimini, Riccione, Bellaria and in inland, Montescudo and Coriano, have associations and groups specializing in embroidery of various kinds, such as macramè, lace and tatting. They are a resource to preserve the tradition and the "know-how" in order to spread the textile history of the territory.
