Rimini in Winter

An occasion to discover art in its beautiful historic centre, its fascinating seaside, the local gastronomy, events, traditions and shopping
Winter is a unexpected season to discover this unusual part of Rimini, choosing among artistic itineraries in search of Roman signs such as Tiberius Bridge or Augustus Arch, which are the source of inspiration for the architecture of the Renaissance with its masterpiece, the Malatesta Temple.  As a matter of fact Rimini is places of artistic and cultural interest with truly unique masterpieces from Roman times and the Renaissance period,

Not to be missed it’s certainly a visit to the Surgeon’s House (Domus del Chirurgo). An archaeological site that came to light from the darkness of the centuries in the heart of the city. The importance of the archaeological discovery depends above all on the richest surgical and pharmaceutical equipment of the Roman time that archaeologists have ever found. Being the Domus situated next to the city museum, the visit to the site becomes an integral part of it.

A cultural tour also includes appetizing stops at typical restaurants where people can taste and enjoy the local dishes: of course, one can't leave the city without tasting the real “piada”

But in Rimini you can also go shopping and find good stuff at reasonable prices especially now during the period of sale. During your walk don't forget to stop for a drink in trendy venues such as the noMi lounge bar next to the Hotel Duomo designed by the famous archistar Ron Arad (via Giordano Bruno 28), a few steps from the main shopping street Corso d’Augusto.

Rimini nightlife takes place above all in Piazza Cavour near the Old Fish Market (Vecchia Pescheria), where every evening thousands of young people meet for a drink or an appetizer, a concert or just a meeting. Full of charm it is certainly the Borgo san Giuliano, the ancient fishermen’s district and Federico Fellini and Giulietta Masina’s favourite place for its silent little roads and squares and its atmosphere full of poetry. Next to Tiberious Bridge, over recent years it has become the nightlife meeting point, all year round. You can take a stroll about 6 o’clock in the evening to have an aperitif or you can stop for a quick authentic “piadina” snack, or a romantic candlelit dinner. The list of recommended places to go is never-ending. Just one piece of advice: lose your way through the alleys and small squares of the town embellished by murales dedicated to Fellini, choose a bar or restaurant that look good to you, and you cannot go wrong.

Walking in town there is a lot to see that reminds of Fellini's films, even though the scenes were always rebuilt in Cinecittà or elsewhere. To find it out, you can start from Parco Fellini where you can view the white Grand Hotel. If you wish, you can sleep in the Fellini suite (his favourite one) or book a dinner based on the Fellini menu (tel. 0039. 0541.56000). Next step should be the harbour and the "palata", the pier promenade, so fascinating also in winter, where the young men in “Vitelloni” like philosophising endlessly in winter time and where the motorcyclist in “Amarcord” used to came and ride his bike at full throttle.

But February is also the month dedicated to children with the Carnival celebrations which animate the historic centre in the week-ends till March 4th. On the occasion streets come alive with music, walk-on actors, clowns and street artists in fancy dresses. Games, music and dance, colors, parades, masks, jokes and fun, are the ingredients of this feast.
During the week-ends it is also possible to visit the wonderful theme park Italia in miniature with faithful scale reproductions of the most beautiful monuments and architectural treasures in Italy and Europe.

In the week-end of Valentine's Day lovers have the chance of taking part in the guided tour organized by Discover Rimini and dedicated to the flower of love par excellence, the rose. This flower with only our petals can be found on many important monuments in Rimini. Actually it was used in the Renaissance by Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta and afterwards, as a decorative form. A unusual way to discover the town from a different point of view (for info and advanced booking 333/7352877)

Many are the exhibitions held in several halls of the City museums. But absolutely not to be missed is the interesting exhibition about Leonardo da Vinc, held in in the near Republic of San Marino. With an easy day trip by bus one can go abroad to the most ancient Republic of the world and visit the “The world of Leonardo”, one of the most important multidisciplinary and interactive exhibition dedicated to both the inventor and the artist. On display over 300 3D reconstructions and real models of Leonardo‘s works, including the first and only digital restoration of "L'ultima cena", the Last Supper, (in 1/1 scale) that will offer the opportunity to discover the details and colours now lost in the original work. For children there are interactive experiences thanks to "Leonardo's Workshop” in order to learn through entertainment. Info: www.ilmondodileonardo.sm
