The photos in this exhibition retrace the territory of the Gothic Line, showing its landscapes, the signs of suffering, the horror of the massacres, the places of battles, the heroism dedications and the anguish of the cemeteries. Images, which after seventy years, tell the story of death and the price which was paid for the conquest of liberty with the aim to confirm the need to continue to defend it.
The "Gothic Line" was the Italian territory that in 1943/1944 was chosen by the German army in order to stop the Allied troops advancing from the south. It was a specially fortified area that extended from Versilia, on the Tyrrhenian coast, to the Adriatic coast near Pesaro, crossing for long stretches the most inaccessible areas of the Apennines.
During this years, the military actions took place in a much wider area. A territory which extended towards the east to lap Bologna, and following the course of some in Emilia-Romagna rivers, reached the Comacchio Valleys.
The catalog accompanying the photo exhibition contains 8 drawings by Adelfo Cecchelli, a presentation by Margarete Bunje, historical comments by Massimo Turchi and texts by Oscar Bandini, Walter Bellisi, Piero Carusone, Mario Pereira, Maren Westermann. Translation of texts into English by Alannah Homes. Edition by Eneo Baborsky.
