Impressionism and Caravaggio are the two new great exhibitions on show in Autumn at Sismondo Castle

Once again two exhibitions of very high quality with art masterpieces known all over the world choose Rimini as their venue. After the great exhibition "From Rembrandt to Gauguin and Picasso. The enchant of painting in Rimini" which closed in Spring 2010, people will have the chance of visiting two new great exhibitions from 23rd October 2010 to 27th March 2011: “Paris. The wonderful years - Impressionism versus the Salon ” and “Caravaggio and other Seventeenth-Century Painters - Masterpieces from the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartford, USA ”.

The exhibitions are organized by Marco Goldin, promoted by Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Rimini and by Linea d'ombra Libri and they will be on show in the beautiful rooms of Sismondo Castle from 23rd October 2010 to 27th March 2011.

"Paris. The wonderful years - Impressionism versus the Salon "
Round 90 paintings from several European and American museums and private collections will be on show. The exhibition presents the extraordinary period in which Paris became the centre of the world in the XIX century.
For the first time in Italy, the Rimini exhibition aims to examine the fascinating story, when innovation was introduced but an enormous wall was raised to oppose that innovation, and also when, what crossed that wall – the wall of the Salon – was the allure that sparks and accompanies painting.
It is worth noting that, at various times the Salon also accepted Impressionism and works by Monet, Pissaro, Sisley, Degas, Bazille, Renoir, Cézanne, Guillaumin, Morisot and Fantin-Latour, to mention only the leading artists associated with the Impressionist movement, all of whom are featured in this exhibition with paintings that were either presented at or rejected by the Salon. The exhibition, divided into three sections (“Face, Body and Figures”, “Suspended Nature” and “The Mirror of Nature”) compares the same subjects painted by the artists of the Salon, the Impressionists and the artists of the Barbizon School before them. Consequently, the exhibition is an authentic chapter of nineteenth-century French art history.
A literary section, within the art exhibition with works from Baudelaire to Zola and Proust, explains the close link between painters and writers.

“Caravaggio and other Seventeenth-Century Painters - Masterpieces from the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartford"
To celebrate the 400th anniversary of Caravaggio’s death in 2010, Castel Sismondo has decided to flank the “Paris: the Wonderful Years” exhibition with a second, extraordinary event, an exhibition which consists of a magnificent selection of fifteen large-format paintings from the American museum’s important collection of works.
It is an exhibition of exceptional quality, all focused on the best masterpieces of the seventeenth-century in Europe, and first of all on Caravaggio and his unforgettable masterpiece, Saint Francis of Assisi in Ecstasy, the great artist’s very first painting of a religious subject, dating back to 1594. This centrepiece is surrounded by other celebrated works by artists who took their inspiration from Caravaggio such as Gentileschi, Strozzi, Morazzone, the Saracens in Italy, Ribera and Zurbaran in Spain, Le Sueur in France, and also by Sweerts, Van Dyck and Hals.
An extraordinary occasion to admire works of great dimensions coming from the oldest museum in the United States of America, the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, Connecticut.
